This coin commemorates the joint consulate of Theodosius II and Valentinian III, who are depicted in consular robes at the start of the inaugural games held on 1 January. Therefore, in their right hands they hold the mappa, a cloth that the emperor would throw down on the sand to signal the start of the events.

On the obverse, frontal cuirassed bust of Theodosius II with a helmet and a diadem of pearls, with a spear on his right shoulder and, on his left, a shield decorated with a biga. Surrounding the emperor, the legend D(ominus) N(oster) THEODOSIVS P(ius) F(elix) AVG(ustus) and a beaded rim. On the reverse, on the left, Theodosius II (Eastern Emperor) and, on the right, Valentinian III (Western Emperor), both enthroned, beneath a star, diademed, nimbate and wearing consular robes. They hold a mappa in their right hands and, in their left, a long cross. Surrounding the figures, the legend SALVS REIPVBLICAE and a beaded rim. On the exergue, CON(stantinopoli) OB(ryzum), i.e. minted in Constantinople and made from pure gold.
