In the Paris of 19th-century modernity, a cosmopolitan and vibrant city, several artistic styles came together to create a trend that took hold throughout the world. By the mid-19th century, the French capital had surpassed Rome as the nerve centre of artistic creation in Europe. It was the Paris of –isms : impressionism, luminism, préciosité, costumbrismo, naturalism…. It was the Paris of modernity and the break from its archaic and academic past.

Against this backdrop, young artists from across Europe settled in the City of Light, drawn by the aura of newness and modernity and the city’s creative energy. Among them, a group of Spanish creators from different generations stood out. With a language of their own and their personal contribution, they were to form what would later become known as the Spanish School of Paris.

El retaule de Sant Miquel de Prats

THE RETABLE FROM SANT MIQUEL DE PRATS

This catalogue aims to lend insight into the context of the time and the significance of the retable. It is not known when or by whom the retable was commissioned. In the 16th century, the priest of Canillo and the sacristans saw that the church needed a retable to remember Saint Michael the Archangel. […] From the Prats retable, in 1992, the Government of Andorra acquired the panel depicting the “war in heaven” that Saint Michael led against the rebel angels, and, in 2006, Creand acquired the predella. The Andorran Cultural Heritage Law guarantees that they can never leave Andorra.
